Hiking, Hinton, and Health

There has been so much happening in the past few weeks that I don't know where to start. After leaving Ohio, I headed to WV to visit with the family for awhile. I had a blast visiting my greatly-missed family members. Mom, Jim, and I made an impromptu trip to Hinton to see my great-uncle Talmadge. He is the last living member of my grandmother's siblings and is doing remarkably well to be turning 90. The trip was as enjoyable for us as for Talmadge, and we have promised to make another trip before the New Year. (Hold us to it, family) Afterward, we headed to one of Beckley's best kept secrets -- the Char House. The steak was quite possibly the best I have ever had. Judging from the final total, we all felt the same way about the food. The three of us had so much fun together and laughed the entire day. That is not hard to do when Jim is around. I am so glad we made the trip and am looking forward to the next one.

The Reeds

We were impressed

Exploring WV is a favorite pastime of mine so I try and take advantage of it whenever I can. New River Gorge was my most recent exploration, and Travis accompanied me. Before the activities started, we hit the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. I must admit I was not too excited about the visit, but it turned out to be very interesting. We had a blast hiking the gorge. It was absolutely beautiful; although, the trails we took were quite easy. It is a good thing neither of us are afraid of heights because we found the rock climber trails and decided to try them. We came to some rather steep cliffs with ladders attached, and the only option was to climb down so we did. I was a bit afraid but glad I did it after reaching the bottom. Travis, on the other hand, seemed to love the descent.

Underground in the coal mine. Our guide was terrific.

Living on the edge!

No fear.

We also hit a great waterfall near Hawk's Nest and did some swimming. The water was a little low and very cold, but it was fun.

I was freezing!

The trip was great, and I think Travis fell in love with the Mountain State. How could anyone not? As far as health goes, I have now hit 10 miles! Watch out, Becky and Mike. Three more miles, and I am ready for the half in Louisville!

Again, you have fun where ever and when ever you go ! I can really see the resemblence of your Mom, Jim, and your great uncle. What a cool picture.
PS. You've said some of the nicest things I've ever heard about Beckley.
